The mantle is the central moving component of a gyratory crusher. It gyrates within the stationary concaves to perform the actual work of compressing and crushing rock, directly controlling the product size and overall efficiency of the primary crushing stage.

Operational Challenges Because of its function, the mantle faces immense operational challenges:

  • Severe Abrasion: Constant contact with hard feed material causes uneven wear, leading to changing chamber geometry and reduced performance.
  • Impact & Fatigue: The component must withstand impact damage from uncrushable objects and metal fatigue caused by cyclical loads.
  • Economic Impact: These wear mechanisms necessitate costly, high-integrity manganese steel castings. Management of the mantle is critical, as replacement leads to significant operational expenses and extensive production downtime.

Strategic Expansion and Capability

Building on extensive experience in producing over 400 types of manganese steel crusher parts for Metso Minerals, Tabarestan Steel Foundry (TSF) took a major step forward in 2003.

To meet the growing needs of the industry, we installed an 8-ton arc furnace in our melting shop. This milestone enabled TSF to cast heavyweight crusher components specifically for iron and copper mining operations, significantly expanding our production capacity.

Engineering Feat: The Chadormalu Project

The first major achievement following this expansion was the production of a gyratory crusher mantle weighing 8 tons for the Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Company.

The Challenge: The customer provided limited technical data for the part. TSF was tasked with producing a heavy-duty component without original blueprints.

The Solution: TSF’s engineering team performed a complete reverse-engineering process. By analyzing a worn sample, the team prepared detailed technical drawings and determined the precise metallurgical properties required for the alloy.

The Result: The newly produced mantle was installed successfully. Remarkably, it demonstrated a longer service life than the original part. This project marked the beginning of TSF’s capability in manufacturing heavyweight casting parts—a venture that concluded with outstanding results and reinforced our reputation for innovation and quality.
